Colosseum, international call for applications issued for the post of Director

An international call for applications for the post of Director of the Colosseum Archeological Park was published on the Ministry of Cultural Heritage website (

Applications must be received by 14 April 2017, while the selection process will be completed by 30 June 2017. The new Director shall hold office for a period of 4 years.

The newborn Colosseum Archeological Park is the result of a reorganization established by Minister Franceschini and includes, in addition to the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Palatine, the Roman Forum and the Domus Aurea. Just as the other 30 special autonomy museums, it will work under the direction of a super-manager, who will be allowed broad autonomy, and will no longer be under the management of the Special Superintendence for the Colosseum (6,4 million visitors in 2016).

In the next few days, the call for applications will be published on the Economist, in order to give it international visibility.

The new Director will earn €145.000 a year, plus any target-based bonuses, depending upon his annual assessment, up to €35.000.

The Director's main tasks will be: the overall management of the archaeological park, the implementation and development of its cultural and scientific purpose, the organization of shows and exhibitions, the analysis, enhancement, communication and promotion of the museum's heritage, establishing the cost of entry tickets and the opening hours (having conferred with the Directorate-General of Museums and the Regional Museum Complex, and in compliance with the guidelines drafted by the Director-General of Museums).

The job requirements are an Italian master's degree (or equivalent educational university qualifications attained abroad), and specific and proven professional qualifications on the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage (managerial status within the Ministry, management positions in public or private institutions or companies, particular cultural and scientific specialization, proven research and academic experience).

The 10 most eligible candidates will be called in for interviews in the month of June 2017, based on which the Board will shortlist 3 candidates, to be proposed to the Ministry.

"This represents the final and most important part of the national museums system reform that started two years ago - said the Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini - and the Colosseum's reputation will guarantee international echo to the announcement and the participation of highly professional applicants.
