Pompeii has reached the target of 3 million visitors

"In 2016, the archaeological site of Pompeii welcomed more than 3 million visitors. In 2017, during the low season, we've already exceeded 100.000 visitors". This was announced by the General Manager of the Great Pompeii Project, Luigi Curatoli, during a press conference with the European Commissioner, Corina Cretu, and the Minister for Cultural Heritage, Dario Franceschini. "Pompeii - he said - has become a prime destination, and no one can deny the uniqueness of its archaeological area". With respect to the number of visits to the archaeological site of Pompeii, "the objective has been achieved. Initially we were planning on returning to the levels that preceded the collapse caused by the 2010-2011 heavy rainfall. We've exceeded that target thanks to a strong interinstitutional cooperation". Commissioner Cretu is of this opinion. "We're talking about - she explained - one of the most important historical sites in Europe, visited by tourists from all over the world, fundamental for the economy of Campania and Italy". Talking about the Great Pompeii Project, Cretu highlighted that it is "an example to emulate for its organization and results. The European Commission will keep on watching out for the Great Pompeii Project - she added - not only because of the 10 million investment. We must succeed 100%". "Pompeii will continue to be an extraordinary symbol of Italy around the world", says the Minister for Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Dario Franceschini. "Pompeii is an incredible open-air city - said the Minister -: a site like this doesn't have a completion of work day, it will always require special care and resources. We can do it".
